After a review of the morphology of the stygobiont species of Cyathura, five new species are described (one from Cuba, two from Haiti, one from Jamaica, and one from Aruba), and additional details are provided for some other species. Considerations are made on the peculiarities of the geographic distribution of the 11 stygobiont species known at present (forming a circum-Caribbean group and an Indo-Pacific one). A study of the relationships between the various species, and comparison with the non-stygobiont (marine or brackishwater) species of the genus, allows the definition of a subgenus Cyathura s. str. (for all non-stygobiont forms and two marine-interstitial ones) and of a new subgenus, Stygocyathura (containing most of the stygobiont species). In the... |

Area-species graphs for stygobiont Crustacea Malacostraca of seven islands in the southern Caribbean have been compared. It appears that the “constants” C and z of these graphs are influenced by the geological time elapsed since the island’s emergence. In older islands the values for C and z are higher than in younger islands. The values for z of younger and older islands are much higher (0.79-0.97) than usually obtained in literature for terrestrial animals (0.20-0.40). This may be explained by the very limited dispersal faculties of K-strategists, such as stygobiont Malacostraca. |

A redescription is provided of Heterocypris margaritae Margalef, 1961 (= H. similis Klie, 1933). H. antillensis n. sp., a species closely related to H. margaritae, is described. Taxonomic remarks are made on H. punctata Keyser, 1975, a species from Florida, which also inhabits part of the Caribbean islands and is related to both other species. Descriptions of chaetotaxy were made according to the system of Broodbakker & Danielopol (1982) and form an example of the use of this system. Carapace length seems to be a very variable character in this genus and must be used as a taxonomic character with great caution. The structure of the hemipenis seems to be a very valuable taxonomic character, as are the furca and maxillular palp and to a lesser degree the... |

Edmonds, S.J.. |
The sipunculan Aspidosiphon exiguus Edmonds, 1974, is recorded from Bonaire and Curaçao (Netherlands Antilles). It was first described from three localities in Cuba. Unlike most aspidosiphonids, the species seems to belong to the interstitial fauna of marine beaches and appears to be tolerant of considerable changes in salinity of its environment. A redescription of A. exiguus, based on the specimens from the Netherlands Antilles, is given. |

The general purpose of this study is to analyze selected factors affecting Cape Verde's ability to increase production and sales of bananas. In this process the export market of Portugal will be examined as it has traditionally been the only export market for Cape Verdian bananas. In specific terms the objectives of this study are: 1) To analyze factors affecting the supply of bananas in Cape Verde; 2) To review trends in demand for bananas in Cape Verde and in Portugal as an attempt to discover potential reasons for the drop in banana exports from Cape Verde; and 3) To suggest additional research and policy considerations which could improve Cape Verde's ability to produce and sell bananas. |

Agriculture development efforts in the past have focused heavily on increasing aggregate output in less developed countries (LDC). In the last 2-3 decades, technology served as a key policy instrument used by developed countries to aid the less developed ones. However, such a policy had led to the neglect of certain farming groups, particularly small farmers. Recent trends in agriculture development tend to pay special attention to the needs of small farmers. It is the small farmers who form the backbone of agriculture in many LDC's. As their development receives priority, so does the need to gain a better understanding of their farming needs. Small farmer response to technology has been unevenly distributed. This has not only varied amongst the... |

Meteorological records and water temperature data from a 119-day period in the winter of 1979-1980 are used to develop and verify a numerical model of local air-water heat energy exchanges in the Indian River lagoon, on the Atlantic coast of South Florida. In terms of day-to-day variability, the most important processes are latent heat exchanges, net incoming solar radiation and sensible heat exchanges - in that order. Cold fronts moving through the study area alternate warm, moist maritime tropical air with relatively cool, dry continental polar air behind the front. As a result, the amount of heat stored in lagoonal waters is most highly correlated with the sensible and latent heat flux terms. Combining the individual heating and cooling processes, daily... |

How potential entrants to an open-access fishery form their expectations determines the fishery’s adjustment path to a steady state but not the steady state values themselves. It is well known that, in the standard model with myopic expectations (those based on current values), boats enter the fishery only when the fish stock is greater than its steady state stock. We show that, with rational expectations (perfect foresight), however, boats may enter when the fish stock is much lower than its steady state value if the boat fleet is sufficiently small. This paper contrasts myopic and rational expectations within a general dynamic model of an open-access fishery. |
